Sir Eduardo
Paolozzi

Sculptor

Widely recognised as one of the 20th Century's greatest artists, he worked in many mediums but was probably best known for his sculpture. Eduardo was remarkably talented and this allowed him to work, teach and exhibit all over the world. His large 'Foot' sculpture stands proudly at the top of Leith Walk. (more)

Dennis
Canavan

Politics

One of Scotland's most popular politicians in recent years but known to many former pupils as Mr Canavan of the Maths Dept. He was a member of the original staff when the school opened in 1969 with the merger of Holy Cross Academy and St Andrew's Secondary. (more)

Pat
Stanton

Sport

A brilliant footballer and quite simply, a legend in Edinburgh. Pat captained the superb Hibs side of the 1970s which won the League Cup and played some of the best football Scotland has seen.  He also played for Scotland and finished his career with league and cup success when the great Jock Stein signed him for Celtic.

Senior Girls
Football
Squad

St Augustine's has been proud of many sports achievers over the years. Continuing the tradition, the all-conquering St Augustine’s senior girls’ football squad reached new heights when they defeated Nicolson Institute 6-0 to win the Bank of Scotland Scottish Schools Shield Final in 2005 ... a fitting end to a wonderful season which had seen many famous victories.

Keith
O'Brien

The Church

Cardinal O'Brien is head of the Catholic Church in Scotland. Born in N. Ireland, Keith's family moved to Scotland where he eventually became a pupil at Holy Cross Academy.  An intelligent man with a pleasant manner, the Cardinal is nonetheless willing to upset people by speaking out on things he feels strongly about. Simon
Pia

Journalism

A successful sports journalist, Simon also wrote the The Scotsman's influential Diary section for a number of years. In addition, he has written a number of books on sport, one of which tells the story of fellow St Augustine's Achiever, Hibs legend Pat Stanton. More recently, Simon has also been a presenter on local radio and more recently been an advisor to top politicians.

John

Smith

Soldier

John was one of many whose great achievement was to help Britain and its allies win the First World War.  Sadly, he paid the ultimate price as a newspaper report in 1916 tells: "Private J. Smith has been killed in action near Somme in France.  He was educated in the local school and before being called up was a factory worker.  He was 18 years of age."
