One of
the most popular writers of the twentieth century.
From school, Alistair joined up for the navy. Later
he read English at Glasgow University and went on to

Robert
Service
Poet |
|
Robert
was among the first pupils at Hillhead when the
school opened in 1885. He loved reading and studied
English at Glasgow University. He saw life as
an adventure so he headed off for Canada where he
had an amazing range of jobs and wrote books and
poetry about the things he saw and heard. His poems
such as those about the harsh life of miners in the
Yukon gold rush have often been criticised by
purists but they were loved by a great many people
and also made him very rich! (more) |

Alf
Wight
Writer |
|
James
Herriot is one of Britain's best-selling authors.
However, this is not his real name. He was actually
christened Alf Wight and he was born in 1916. After Hillhead High, Jim trained as a
vet before working in a veterinary
practice in the Yorkshire dales for many happy years. The stories
and adventures based on his time as a young vet are
immortalised in his celebrated series of books ‘All
Creatures Great and Small’ . The books sold in
millions and were made into a TV series and a film. |
