Alan
McGee

Music

Alan is a big success in the music industry. As a lover of rock music, he set up his own record label with a £1,000 loan. He worked hard but  found it tough until he discovered Oasis, and his company became successful. Tony Blair asked Alan for advice on helping Britain's creative industries.

Ronnie
Simpson

Sport

Ronnie Simpson is the most successful Scottish goal-keeper ever, having won a European Cup winners medal with Celtic at the age of 37!  He also played for Scotland at 38. Astonishingly, he made his first class debut for Queens Park at only 14!

Bobby
Gillespie

Music

Became famous as the lead singer of Primal Scream, one of the longest-lasting bands in rock music. The group also had fellow Kings Park pupils Robert Young and Jim Beattie (see below). Jim left to join another group, but Primal Scream have gone on to enjoy great success.

Stewart
Maxwell

MSP

Stewart left Kings Park in 1981 to study at Glasgow College of Technology.  He worked in the business sector and then with Strathclyde Fire Brigade before being elected as an MSP for West of Scotland.  Stewart represents the SNP at Holyrood. (more >)

Lynne
MacDougall

Sport

When it comes to running, Lynne is an inspiration. In 1984 she broke the Scottish under-20 800m record and also reached the final of the 1500m at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Moreover, at the age of 35 she was the first British woman home in the London Marathon!

Robert
Young

Music

Robert is one of the original members of the highly successful Primal Scream. Along with fellow pupil, Bobby Gillespie, he has played bass and keybords with the band for 20 years. During that time, Scream have toured throughout the world and sold a huge number of albums.

Donald
MacCormick

News

Donald became well-known throughout Britain when he hosted the BBC's flagship current affairs programme, Newsnight.  His in-depth knowledge along with his tough but polite style of interviewing helped to make him one of the country's most respected journalists.

Willie
Donachie

Sport

Willie played 35 times for Scotland's football team.  He was a skilful left-back who could tackle and pass the ball extremely well.  He spent almost all of his career at Manchester City, a club he grew to love.  After his playing days were over, he returned to city for a long spell as a coach.

Jim
Beattie

Music

One of the original founders of Primal Scream, Jim left them to set up another group called Spirea X. He is a very talented guitarist and his music teachers would have been pleased to see "composed, arranged, written and produced by James Beattie" on the record sleeves of albums.

Roy
Summers

Photography

Roy left King’s Park in 1964. Interested in press photography, he tried several newspapers but with no luck. A medical photographer’s post at Glasgow University got him into the profession. As senior photographer in a Marine Research laboratory in Oban he learned underwater photography. Then the Oban Times gave Roy the press job he wanted with Scottish Field magazine – his ideal occupation.

Mr
Thomson

Teacher

Mr Thomson has been part of the Music Dept. at King's Park for many years and has inspired a large number of pupils in that time.  So much so that in 2003, he won the Daily Record Award for The Inspirational Teacher of the Year. He said, "It means so much that my pupils thought to nominate me ... they have given me something I can carry with me for the rest of my career."

Cameron
McNeish

Climber

Cameron used to look out at the hills from the windows of King's Park. Now he makes his living from his love of climbing. He writes books on the subject as well as a column for the Sunday Herald. Cameron is also a lecturer and has presented TV programmes on climbing. Of course, he also spends a lot of time in the hills! (more)

Significant Teacher:
Hector McIntosh (PE)

David
Sibbald

Technology

David is one of Scotland's most successful entrepreneurs. He started up his own computer software company in the early 1990s which he sold a few years later for a massive profit. He has now launched another new company and also helps the Scottish Government make decisions on the technology sector. (more)

Andrew
Innes

Music

Andrew joined Primal Scream in the mid 1980s and went on to enjoy a fantastic spell with a highly respected band. Along with fellow former King's Park pupils Bobby Gillespie, Robert Young and Jim Beattie, he added to Scream's world-wide reputation. As well as playing guitar, Andrew wrote a lot of the band's music.

Malcolm
Cook

Psycholgy

Malcolm is a senior lecturer in forensic psychology at the University of Abertay. His remarkable career has covered military aerospace, flight safety, training, system design and forensic psychology. Malcolm has received almost £1m in research funding and has enjoyed spending every penny on books, equipment and people – many of whom go on to research careers of their own!

Jennifer
Aitken

Music

Jennifer believes her success is due to the music dept. at King's Park. The Strathclyde University Maths student says she was an average trombone player but became good enough to play for the Scottish Youth Symphony Orchestra. She has now played in many bands, some of them abroad, and could decide to turn professional.

Significant Teacher:
Mr Thomson (Music)

Dr. Colin
Miller

Engineering

Colin received a PhD degree in Optics from Glasgow University, and then joined BT Research Laboratories in Suffolk. He was part of the team that developed the world’s first practical optical fibre communication system between Ipswich and Woodbridge, and published many scientific papers in the field of optical fibre amplifiers and lasers. He is now retired from two businesses he set up after leaving BT.

John

Smith

Soldier

John was one of many whose great achievement was to help Britain and its allies win the First World War. Sadly, he paid the ultimate price as a report in a local newspaper in 1916 tells: "Corporal J. Smith has been killed in action near Somme in France.  He was educated in the local school and before being called up was an apprentice plumber. He was 19 years of age."

Sean
Towler

Science

Sean was one of only 25 students across Scotland selected for the Scottish Space School 2006 visit to NASA headquarters in the USA. During the trip he worked with NASA astronauts and scientists and visited laboratories and the space shuttle. The Space School aims to excite young Scots about the career options in science, engineering and technology.

Brian

Hall

Business

Brian always wanted to run his own business and has now achieved his aim.  As the owner of a local building firm he tends to be very busy because a lot of people know and trust him.  Of course, Brian knows he must do a good job or his reputation will quickly begin to suffer.  Brian is very proud of the fact that his company now creates jobs in the community where he grew up.

Sandra

Jenny

Harris

Community

Many pupils choose to help people less well off than themselves. For example, Jenny spends a lot of time working with a volunteer group which helps the families of local children with special needs.  Jenny is happy to give up her spare time in this way because she finds it very satisfying and has also made many good friends.  Now she is considering a career in education.
