Jackie
McNamara


Sport

Jackie's talent was clear when he was a pupil at Lochend. He made his name with Celtic before moving to Hibs where he played for many years, including a spell as captain. His son, Jackie Jnr. has captained both Celtic and Scotland in recent years.

Actor

Gary is a top actor. He shot to fame with his wonderful and moving performance as Billy Elliot's father in the film of that name.  Following this, he has worked with some of the world's top actors and directors. At school Gary's surname was Stevenson.


Doreen
Wilson


Nurse

Doreen trained as a nurse in Airdrie and went on become Director of Nursing in a large nursing home in England. This was followed by a move to North America where she nursed in both Canada and the USA. Doreen even wrote the state nursing exam for Florida!

Radio

Tiger Tim is a well-known DJ whose enthusiasm has helped him keep up the pace over the years. Never one to avoid the spotlight or ignore a challenge, his career has been both exciting and varied. Tim has been a pop singer, presented a large number of music shows on television and radio, and has even found time to write his autobiography.

Education

Shelley hit the headlines when she won the Scottish Young Adult Learners' Award for 2004. She did so after starting a construction course at John Wheatley College where her good work helped her secure an apprenticeship with Glasgow City Council as a trainee joiner.  Her early success in construction proved that talented females can do well in an industry which has for many years been dominated by males.

Engineer

Robert is Construction Director for Edinburgh Trams, currently Scotland's largest construction project. Having left Lochend to undergo an apprenticeship, Robert discovered a host of opportunities to develop his career and returned to higher education to help realise his ambitions. Other achievements include starting and managing one of the country's top Electrical Engineering and Contracting businesses!


Duncan
Wilson


Engineer

Duncan studied at Strathclyde University and went on to become a successful civil engineer working in many parts of the world. He was based in San Diego and Palm Springs in the USA before moving to Canada where he now lives in Ontario and is currently working in Edmonton.

Squad

 

In 2004 Lochend's under 14 football team won the Crookston Cup which is open to all Glasgow Schools. This was a great achievement given that it was the team's first year together. In fact, it was the Lochend football team for a number of years.

Anderson


Finance

Angela became famous throughout the United Kingdom when she starred in a series of commercials for one of the country's largest banks.  She had worked for the bank for many years before she was chosen because of her good singing voice and friendly personality.


Bobby

Sport

At school, Bobby was a wonderful footballer whose talent allowed him to outwit and outplay bigger and stronger opponents. After school he played for Rangers and was capped by Scotland. Other clubs included Motherwell and Morton.

Lochend High School won the SQA 'Centre of the Year' Award in 2003/4 for the groundbreaking partnership with John Wheatley College in the delivery of an alternative curriculum. Many students have benefited greatly from the programme.

Sport

An achiever in the tough world of professional football. Bobby was a top player at Rangers and Kilmarnock before he became a manager with Kilmarnock, Hibs and now Plymouth Argyle. In 1997 he managed Kilmarnock to a historic Scottish Cup success.

Nurse

Louise realised a childhood dream when she gained a place on a nursing course. She is now in the third year of her training and has passed all her assessments so far. Louise is looking forward to working in Accident & Emergency (A&E) as she will discover whether TV's Casualty is accurate!  She eventually hopes to become a hospital ward sister.

Snooker

Graeme became the world's top snooker player in 2004. He had won many tournaments before that year's World Championship but was not regarded as one of the tourna- ment favourites.  Nevertheless he overcame the odds to bravely claim the title. Like most top sports stars, Graeme's success was built on a great deal of hard work as well as talent.

Law

Many former pupils have followed a career in the law.  Sandra is a good example. She studied law at university before joining a law firm to complete her training. She has since gained experience of many aspects of the Scottish legal system.  Sandra now puts this knowledge to good use by helping her clients deal with a wide variety of problems.

Police

Sarah decided on a career in the police when she was in her final year at school. She has never regretted it.  Her work is varied and she enjoys helping the public in many ways. Sarah also likes being part of a hard-working team who help each other.  She believes it is important to uphold the law and finds it is very interesting to deal with those people who decide to break it.

Education

Local families believe learning is important and it is therefore no surprise that many former pupils have achieved a lot in the world of education. Jim is a good example. After going to university and then studying to become a teacher, he has enjoyed a long and successful career in the classroom.  Jim has helped many young people not only pass exams, but also enjoy school!

Soldier

John was one of many whose great achievement was to help Britain and its allies win the First World War. Sadly, he paid the ultimate price as a report in a local newspaper in 1916 tells: "Corporal J. Smith has been killed in action near Somme in France.  He was educated in the local school and before being called up was a farm labourer. He was 19 years of age."

Jones

Engineer

In the workplace, people must be prepared to re-train and keep their skills up-to-date.  Susan is a good example. She first served an apprenticeship as an engineer and has since trained in computer studies.  She enjoys using modern technology in her work.  In fact, Susan now trains other engineers in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) at work.

Business

Brian always wanted to run his own business and has now achieved his aim.  As the owner of a local building firm he tends to be very busy because a lot of people know and trust him.  Of course, Brian knows he must do a good job or his reputation will quickly begin to suffer.  Brian is very proud of the fact that his company now creates jobs in the community where he grew up.

Social Work

Robert spent a gap year working as a volunteer in a developing country before completing a university degree in Politics & Economics. He then decided to train as a social worker.  Robert now has a heavy case load at work and at times, his job can prove demanding.  However, he has no regrets because he finds it very satisfying to help people in great need.

Sport

Callum showed a lot of promise as a young footballer at school and has gone on to enjoy a career in the professional game.  He knows there are many gifted players around so he trains hard to develop his skills and remain fit.  He also goes into each game prepared to work hard for his team.  Callum has a very positive attitude which means he enjoys life even when his team loses.

Politics

MPs and MSPs may be better known to the general public, but local councillors such as Mary, take many decisions that have a real impact on the lives of local people. Each councillor is elected to represent an area called an 'electoral ward'.  Mary is a hard-working councillor who tries her best to help people with a very wide range of problems.

Finance

Pauline liked accountancy at school and chose to study it at university. She then joined a large Scottish bank and quickly became a team leader who enjoyed the challenge of helping others to perform well.  Pauline has since shown that Scottish qualifications  are respected throughout the world by moving to a senior post with a large accountancy firm in Australia!

Government

Politicians make Government decisions but it is civil servants who put them into practice.  Without civil servants, important services such as hospitals and schools would grind to a halt. Many former pupils have gone on to enjoy successful careers in the Civil Service.  Alan is a good example.  He has held many top posts including a spell working closely with a government minister.

Health

The school is proud of many former pupils who have gone on to work in the National Health Service (NHS). Janet studied Medicine at university and at one stage was a doctor in the Accident & Emergency Unit of a major hospital dealing with victims of major road traffic accidents as well as patients with sprained ankles! She is now a General Practitioner (GP) based at a local health centre.

Community

Many pupils choose to help people less well off than themselves. For example, Emma spends a lot of time working with a volunteer group which helps the families of local children with special needs.  Emma is happy to give up her spare time in this way because she finds it very satisfying and has also made many good friends.  Now she is considering a career in education.
