Charles Wells Pub Company
leads the way in Bedfordshire
Charles Wells Pub Company is the first
major company in Bedfordshire to sign up to the
Schools Alcohol Awareness Project,
a nationwide education initiative which encourages young people to
adopt responsible attitudes towards alcohol.
As a business active in the licensed
retail sector, Charles Wells Pub Company is delighted that the classroom materials distributed free to
nominated schools encourage young people to consider the dangers
of alcohol misuse and the serious impact it can have on their
life.
Holly Hammond, Training & Recruitment Co-ordinator for
Charles Wells Pub Company, confirmed the company strongly
supports the aims of the project and has nominated ten
secondary schools for the scheme. The
schools are located in communities where Charles Wells pubs are
based and the company is therefore keen to help the schools
educate young people about the dangers of alcohol misuse.
The Schools Alcohol Awareness Project
is delivered in partnership with
schools but is not a government initiative. Its success is
due to companies from within the licensed retail sector who wish
to help teachers tackle a significant social problem.

The scheme was set up in 2007 in partnership with
BII, a national charity and the
professional body for the licensed retail sector. With over
15,000 members, it promotes high standards, good employment
practice and social responsibility within the industry.
Cathie Smith, Director of BIIAB said, "We are very grateful to
Charles Wells Pub Company
for this support which allows us to
help teachers in a practical way while also raising awareness of
the difficult issues surrounding young people and alcohol."
Patrick Gaffney, Director of the Schools Project added his
own thanks saying, “We can only make a difference in schools if we
gain the support of the wider community. I am delighted that
Charles Wells Pub Company have decided to lead the way in this
important initiative. I understand they recently won the
2009 Pub Company of the Year award and I think we can
view their involvement in our project as another example of
their commitment to the people and communities they serve.”
At the same time as tackling issues related to alcohol misuse,
the Schools Project also helps pupils throughout the
country understand the growing importance of the hospitality
industry and informs them about some of the many career paths
the sector offers.
