Fox
grilled by students at Fettes College!
Fettes College recently welcomed back former pupil Alasdair Fox
for a Question & Answer session on the legal system and the wide
variety of work undertaken by today's lawyers.
Along with his day-to-day work as a Partner with Anderson
Strathern providing expert advice on agricultural law, Alasdair
acts as Clerk to the Governors of Fettes as well as the
College's lawyer.
Over his years in practice he has built up a wealth of knowledge
on many different aspects of the legal system. This is fortunate
because he had to have his wits about him when he faced a host
of questions from the student members of the Fettes College Law
Society.
The questions ranged from his views on the portrayal of lawyers
on television through to the work of criminal and corporate
lawyers in the modern world. Thankfully Alasdair's great
experience stood him in good stead and he coped admirably with
all the students threw at him.
Speaking after the event he said, “It was a pleasure to take
part. I greatly enjoyed tackling the wide range of questions the
young people came up with! The students are clearly talented and
genuinely interested in the workings of the legal system. I
would not be surprised to see many of them join the profession
and I am sure that when this happens, they will be a credit both
to themselves and their teachers."
Alasdair's visit to Fettes College was one of a series of
similar visits organised by the Scottish Schools Law Project,
a teacher-led initiative which has gained the backing of the Law
Society of Scotland. Anderson Strathern was the very first
law firm to sign up to the scheme, nominating Knox Academy in
Haddington and Gullane Primary School as well as Fettes College.
Where Anderson Strathern led, 200 Scottish law firms have since
followed.
The Law Society of Scotland’s Director of Education & Training,
Liz Campbell commented, “We are delighted that Anderson
Strathern have offered their continued support to this programme
as it helps break down some of the misconceptions and
stereotypes which still persist about solicitors and the work
they do.”
Speaking on behalf of Fettes College Law Society, President
Heather Shand said she was very grateful to Alasdair Fox for
taking time out of his busy schedule and for providing a very
interesting insight into his own work as well as many other
aspects of the legal system. She confirmed the feedback
from the students had been excellent.
The Scottish Schools Law Project is run by former
teacher, Patrick Gaffney. He said, “I am pleased the Fettes
visit proved so worthwhile. I greatly appreciated the
warmth of the welcome from the College and its talented
students.”
“I am also indebted to Alasdair Fox and others at Anderson
Strathern as the visit would not have been possible without
their support. It is a daunting prospect to sit in front
of a group of teenagers but Alasdair got it just right.
His engaging, open and relaxed manner was spot on and the
students not only enjoyed hearing about his thoughts and
experiences but were also challenged to think about things a
little more deeply themselves. If we can help young people
learn AND they leave the room feeling it was an enjoyable hour
well spent, then we have done our job.”
