Local lawyer
to answer pupil questions at Castle Douglas High School
Iain McDonald, a partner in Gillespie Gifford & Brown LLP,
is set to visit Castle Douglas High School to
participate in a Question & Answer session with pupils.
The visit forms part of the
Schools Law Project, an initiative backed
by the Scottish legal profession as a way of introducing young
people to the legal system and the wide variety of work that
lawyers do.
Iain, a former pupil of Castle Douglas High, was born and
brought up in the town and has maintained strong links with the
school over the years. He is a highly
experienced solicitor who is responsible for GG&B's Court
Department. He also has great expertise in all aspects of
house purchase and sale as well as wills and executries.
During the visit, pupils will therefore be able to ask questions
on a wide range of topics including how the law affects young
people. Iain will also be happy to chat to
senior students who may be considering a law course at
university.
Speaking of the upcoming visit, a spokesperson for the school
said, “We are very grateful to Iain for finding the time to
visit us. The relaxed session we have planned will give pupils a
great opportunity to find out more about the legal system and
how it may affect them now and in the future. Senior pupils
considering a legal career will also value the chance to find
out about the day to day work lawyers do.”
Meanwhile, Mr McDonald said, “It is very important that young
people understand our legal system and feel confident
when dealing with members of the legal profession. Our
firm is very much part of the local community and we are
therefore very happy to answer the questions pupils may have.”
The programme of lawyer visits has the full backing of the Law
Society of Scotland. The Society’s Director of Education &
Training, Liz Campbell commented, “I am pleased that this
nationwide project will help the pupils at Castle Douglas High
School, and I am also grateful that GG&B are willing to
help in this way. I am sure Iain McDonald will receive a warm and enthusiastic welcome from the
school.”
Along with the school visit, GG&B have nominated both Castle
Douglas High and Kirkcudbright Academy for the supply of
teacher-friendly project materials which use quizzes and puzzles
to inform pupils about many different aspects of the Scottish
legal system and help them understand that laws bring
responsibilities as well as rights.
Patrick Gaffney, Director of the
Schools Law Project commented, “I am extremely
grateful to
GG&B
for assisting both Castle Douglas High and Kirkcudbright
Academy
in this way. I know they are a busy law firm so I greatly appreciate the
time Iain McDonald is taking to assist local youngsters.”
