We are very happy to recommend the following first class initiatives ...

►   The Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament

For the past 10 years, The Law Society of Scotland has organized The Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament which is open to all secondary schools in Scotland.

Having witnessed recent finals and participated as judges, we have no hesitation in recommending this as one of the best educational initiatives available.

Pupils from competing schools gain valuable experience and develop high-level skills which are of great use in later life.

The standard of debate offered by the four schools competing in the national final is remarkable and is enhanced by excellent floor contributions from many youngsters from other participating schools who attend the final.

Any school which requires information about the competition should visit:

►   The Faculty of Advocates 'MiniTrials' Initiative

We have witnessed 'MiniTrial' first-hand and are very happy to recommend it as a first-rate programme which gives young people a true insight into the workings of the court system.

MiniTrials are simulated court cases designed to be conducted by secondary schools within two double periods ... or tailored to suit the class.

The MiniTrials materials have been prepared by Scottish lawyers and are based on what actually happens in the Scottish Sheriff Court.  The materials help pupils learn about the Scottish legal system, its courts and the people who appear in them.  The experience is interesting, enjoyable and highly educational for young people.

The MiniTrials materials are available free - by e-mail or download by visiting ...
