The Schools Citizenship And Law Project
(SCALP)

The project

The Schools Law Project is a highly successful attempt by teachers and the legal profession to introduce young people to the legal system and those who work within it.

The initiative builds links between law firms and schools with important benefits for both.

The Schools Law Project was prompted by the fact that young people often have little understanding of the law and fail to appreciate how vital a role it plays in our society. Many also fail to understand that laws bring responsibilities as well as rights.

The initiative was set up in Scotland in 2003 and is now being extended throughout the UK. It has catered for 150,000 pupils to date.

The Schools Law Project is delivered by teachers but is not a government initiative.  Its success is due entirely to the support of the UK's legal community, something they deserve great credit for.
