Sheriff Crowe joins Gordon Brown in
visit to old school
Sheriff Frank Crowe joined Gordon Brown on a visit to their
former school, Kirkcaldy High, when Frank
represented the legal community among a group of distinguished former
pupils.
The aim of the visit, organised by The Schools
Project, was to help raise the confidence and ambition of
young people by highlighting the success of former
pupils of their school.
Other Kirkcaldy High achievers attending the event
were Kate Donegan, Governor of HMP Glenochil,
Professor Alan Rodger, Medical Director of The
Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow, Lynn Watt, the
first female Vice President of Scottish Building and
Professor Ian Wooton, Head of Economics at
Strathclyde University.
Frank Crowe thoroughly enjoyed being part of the
group which participated
in a lively Question & Answer session with pupils.
As a Sheriff, he attracted a number of interesting
questions including one from a youngster who wanted
to know if he had sent anyone famous to jail!
Sheriff Crowe features in a special Legal Achievers section
of the Schools Law Project website at
www.schoolsproject.co.uk. This has been set up in consultation
with the Law Society of Scotland to show young
people that a great variety of individuals from many
different backgrounds work
within the legal community, and also to
help potential law students understand that a
qualification in the Law opens the door to many
career paths
The Legal Achievers site carries
mini-profiles of a wide range of individuals who
reflect different areas of interest and are at
various stages of their legal career. Teachers
and careers
advisors are using the
site to help with pupils who are considering a career in the
Law.
Director of Education & Training at the Law Society
of Scotland, Liz Campbell says, “We are very pleased
with the way the Schools Law Project is
developing. We want it to provide a
common-sense, practical resource which can help
young people who want to study law without adding to
the workload of busy teachers or career advisors.”
Many law firms are now involved. They partner
schools of their choice by sponsoring classroom
materials and pupil prizes.
The Schools Law Project is run by former teacher, Patrick Gaffney. In 2004, the
Law Society of Scotland presented Patrick with what he
proudly refers to as his ‘Lawscar’ for the great
success of the project.
Patrick says, “From the outset, the success of
the Schools Law Project has been due to the
remarkable support of the Law Society as well as
more than 200 law firms throughout the country. I have
been extremely impressed by the response of the
legal community.”
